Conducting Course

Designed for student conductors leading school bands, CCAs, and orchestras, as well as ensemble leaders seeking to deepen their craft. Under the mentorship of Mr Lester Kong, a prize-winning conductor with over 10 years of experience, participants receive warm, personalised guidance tailored to their current level and goals.

 

We believe every conductor has a unique voice waiting to be discovered. Our role is to help you find it.

Course Objectives
  • Develop conducting techniques for instrumental works

  • Build confidence in score reading and interpretation

  • Master rehearsal strategies and ensemble leadership

Course Outline
  • Module 1: Foundations
    Baton grip, posture, basic conducting patterns (2/4, 3/4, 4/4), cueing, and preparatory gestures

  • Module 2: Expressive Technique
    Dynamics, phrasing, articulation, left-hand gestures, and advanced beat patterns

  • Module 3: Score Mastery
    Score reading, transposition, instrumental ranges, and effective score marking

  • Module 4: Rehearsal Leadership
    Rehearsal planning, communication skills, error detection, and problem-solving

  • Module 5: Applied Conducting
    Conducting live repertoire with a mixed ensemble (quintet) with real-time feedback

Live Conducting Experience

Every term, participants have the opportunity to conduct a live mixed ensemble (quintet) in a supportive, supervised setting. This is where technique meets artistry—you'll apply what you've learned in individual sessions and grow with constructive, encouraging feedback.

Course Details

Prerequisites: Basic music reading ability; prior ensemble experience recommended
Materials Required: Baton and scores for lessons
Format: Individual sessions + termly live conducting practice with quintet
